In this article the author uses two comparative analyses to comment on the social representation of children produced by journalists. The first describes the "international child" as portrayed in the pages of two national generalist newspapers (Público and Diário de Notícias) in the year 2000. The second bases itself on a particular week in the coverage of five newspapers (Público, Diário de Notícias, Le Monde, The Guardian and El Pais) during the same year, and assesses the ways in which children are presented in the titles of pieces that refer to them. While the former emphasises the geography variable in order to define "our children" and the "others", the latter displays forms of representation which devalue children’s place in society.
