Mainly treading some of the key ground in the current European debate on the subject, this text aims to highlight some of the central axes of and constraints on current education policies, against a background in which the role of the State is changing. Although it is possible to address this topic from various different theoretical and conceptual perspectives, the author adopts a sociological stance. He begins by critically reviewing the (old) theories of the State, before going on to very briefly discuss some of the emergent theoretical alternatives. The latter seek to describe and account for new forms of State action, which are already visible at the level of education policies and are increasingly being conditioned by a variety of aspects and repercussions of the globalisation process.
