In Portugal there are few studies on racism and even less on the way in which it is perceived by those who are most frequently its victims. This article, which is based on empirical evidence derived from a national survey and from in-depth interviews with migrants from Guinea-Bissau, analyses the latter's perceptions of racism on the basis of their personal, day-to-day experiences. It calls attention to the differences between these perceptions, which are influenced by the migrants' social profiles, and relates racism to the social contrasts and cultural continuities that characterise African minority groups in Portugal.
