Resumen

SOUSA, Pedro Diniz de. Um modelo de análise da dramatização na imprensa escrita. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2001, n.35, pp.79-116. ISSN 0873-6529.

A definition of the concept of dramatisation and an identification of the functions of dramatic discourse in the mass media field are used to design an analytical grid with which to capture the different features of this discourse. It does so using tools such as metaphor, metonym, simplification, personification or emotional appeal. Although the model is constructed on the basis of an object which is situated against a background of a doctrinaire written press and during a period of crisis (the so-called PREC - the revolutionary period that followed the 1974 Portuguese Revolution), when several factors combined to favour dramatic discourse, the theme appears to continue to be a highly relevant one as we move from one century to the next. We have therefore constructed the model in such a way as to make it possible to approach other types of media in the future. The case study concludes with the hypothesis that dramatisation constitutes an effective means for inverting the terms of an emblematic phrase from the ideology of objectivity (facts are sacred, comment is free): dramatic discourse permits journalistic practice in which, without needing to distort the "truth", all facts are mere ornaments for an ideological arena that is indeed untouchable (comment is sacred, facts are free).

Palabras clave : Dramatisation; written press; doctrinaire press; discourse analysis.
