This article forms part of a research project that was set against the backcloth of the theme of loneliness and sociabilities at the turn of the millennium. The object of the study was the analysis of three ways that social actors have discovered in order to communicate: personal ads published in a magazine, an association which organises encounters between unattached people and help lines. The theoretical framework was problematised according to Giddens’ theory of late modernity, as well as an analysis of demographic movements and family reconstitution. It pays particular attention to female emancipation in gender relationships and also refers to the importance of the pure relationship (Giddens), of the new model of private life (Kaufmann) and of neo-tribalism (Maffesoli).
