Abstract

SILVA, Paula. Knowing disease: patients first. Sociologia [online]. 2018, vol.36, pp.119-144. ISSN 0872-3419.  https://doi.org/10.21747/08723419/soc36a6.

Frequently, patients´ experience of cancer is not reflected in the biomedical commitment to restore health. The paper explores this issue by analyzing the narratives of cancer patients. It was used an action-research strategy in a contemporary approach of Grounded Theory. This allowed us to understand the personal and social construction of cancer, as well as enabled the multidisciplinary production of cancer booklets.133 semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients with breast, lung, colon, esophagus, prostate, thyroid, bladder and stomach cancers.

Keywords : experience of cancer; biomedicine; cancer booklets.
