Abstract

FARIA, Rita. Custom tailored science: conflicts of interest and interference in commissioned scientific research. Sociologia [online]. 2018, vol.36, pp.97-118. ISSN 0872-3419.

Science is being asked to connect with social stakeholders. However, such connection may give rise to undisclosed conflicts of interest, or interference from commissioners of research into the research process. The paper presents the perceptions of researchers concerning such issues, and further shows a general lack of its regulation. Social harms stemming from these situations will be described, and the paper will argue for the need for further empirical studies. Also, current features of science will be presented as facilitating the commitment of such situations of conflicts of interest or interference, which may be labeled as research fraud.

Keywords : science; conflicts of interest; research misconduct.
