A historical interpretation is proposed on adult education in Portugal during the period of the “30 glorious years”. International trends and singularities of the Portuguese social formation are highlighted. Our goal is to overcome the reduction of education to the initiatives carried out by the State. The period in question is crossed by the dynamics of popular education in a context of social conflict.
