Abstract
MATOS, José Nuno. Proletarians or professionals? The journalist´s condition during Estado Novo (1934-1958). Sociologia [online]. 2017, vol.34, pp.27-45. ISSN 0872-3419. https://doi.org/10.21747/08723419/soc34a2.
The establishment of an authoritarian regime in Portugal, from 1926, imposed restrictions on the journalism then practiced. With the institutionalization of the Estado Novo in 1934, journalism became subject not only to censorship, but also to the guidelines produced by the regime. From the research of the Bulletin of the National Union of Journalists and Literary Gazette, published by the Association of Journalists and Men of Letters of Oporto, the aim of the study lies in the analysis of a series of articles, speeches and debates on the journalist's condition. These, as we shall demonstrate, reflect the split between advocates of an elite journalism, more affiliated to the regime, and those who regarded journalism as an eminently labour activity
