Abstract

GOMES, Sílvia  and  SILVA, Manuel Carlos. Life Conditions and trajectories of male and female Roma prisoners in Portugal. Sociologia [online]. 2014, n.tematico4, pp.77-95. ISSN 0872-3419.

This paper aims to analyze the criminal practices of Roma individuals through the study of their life histories. Based on 25 interviews addressed to male and female Roma prisoners, we analyzed their objective life conditions and criminal experiences. These were seen in the light of the intersection of class, gender and ethnicity. We conclude that the crimes in this ethnic group are the result of combined processes of exclusion and social inequality, prejudice or racism, and that the intersections of class, gender and ethnicity strongly structure their objective living conditions and their criminal involvement

Keywords : crime; Roma; life trajectories.
