Abstract

SOEIRO, José. From Geração à Rasca to Que se Lixe a Troika: Portugal in the new international cycle of protest. Sociologia [online]. 2014, vol.28, pp.55-79. ISSN 0872-3419.

Since the end of 2010 we have witnessed a new wave of international protest that reveal a crisis of legitimacy of political agents, the widespread dissatisfaction with the responses to economic crisis and a challenge to the processes of labour precarisation. In Portugal, this cycle of collective action had its foundational event in the “Geração à Rasca” demonstration and its most recent expression in the protests called by the “ Que se Lixe a Troika”. In this article, we try to explain the background of these mobilizations, to identify their main features and present a number of hypotheses to interpret its sociological meaning

Keywords : cycle of collective action; austerity; social movements.
