Abstract

SILVESTRE, Agostinho Rodrigues  and  FERNANDES, Luís. Labor and social marginalization processes in XXI century: theoretical approaches and statistic data. Sociologia [online]. 2014, vol.27, pp.27-44. ISSN 0872-3419.

This article’s main theme is the relation between labor, poverty and social marginalization in western contemporary societies. It is organized in two parts: the first discusses the mutations that labor has suffered, especially on the last four decades, both in terms of its social and cultural centrality, as its symbolic value and structuring power of biographic paths; the second part, its relation to poverty and social marginalization. Even if one insists on maintaining the traditional role of work, the data from various investigations show that these changes consist on deepening inequalities and social cleavages.

Keywords : mutations in labor; poverty; advanced social marginality.
