Abstract

ZILHAO, Adriano. A multidisciplinary proposal to understand the urban center as a total social fact. Sociologia [online]. 2013, vol.25, pp.55-77. ISSN 0872-3419.

A multidisciplinary proposal to understand the urban center as a total social fact The transformation processes of the cities' traditional centres have recently assumed a unique importance expressed in the change of their functional profile, in the loss of importance of those centres as reference locations for the symbolic reading of the city and for its collective and projected image. Through this text, different disciplinary approaches will be exposed indispensable for the building of the theoretical and methodological path for the analysis of the urban centrality as a "total social fact", i.e. a totalizing concept, understood as a complex reality where each integral feature will only be significant when compared with all others and the reality they are part of, which reality is only separable by convention.

Keywords : Total social fact; Multy-disciplinarity; Urban centrality.
