Abstract

PIRES, Rui Pena. The problem of integration. Sociologia [online]. 2012, vol.24, pp.55-87. ISSN 0872-3419.

Integration is the set of processes of constitution of a society from the combination of its components, be they people, organizations or institutions. In modernity, the question of integration is of particular relevance due to the processes of individualization and differentiation, which are reflected in an increase of those components. This paper conceptualizes the processes of differentiation and individualization, and discusses its consequences in terms of social and systemic integration of modern societies.

Keywords : Differentiation; Individualization; Social integration; Systemic integration.
