Abstract

DUARTE, Madalena  and  OLIVEIRA, Ana. Women at the margins: domestic violence and immigrant women. Sociologia [online]. 2012, vol.23, pp.223-237. ISSN 0872-3419.

The violence within intimate relationships remains today as a very serious form of discrimination based on gender inequality. Around the world women are victims of violence simply because they are women. Thus, violence in intimate relationships occurs in all societies, cultures, races, social classes, ethnicities, sexual orientations and religions. However, the fact that this violence is transversal to all these aspects should not obscure the fact that they not only may increase the risk of these women to violence, but also to magnify the difficulties they encounter in seeking help. In this article we reflect on the obstacles that immigrant women in Portugal face when they are in a situation of domestic violence.

Keywords : Immigrant women; Domestic violence; Discrimination; Culture; Gender.
