MONTEIRO, Georgina et al. Orbital and periorbital cellulitis: an 11 - year case series. Nascer e Crescer [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.3, pp.158-161. ISSN 0872-0754.

Introduction: Cellulitis of the orbital region are a common pediatric illness, which can be potentially severe. Objectives: The present study reviews the epidemiology, etiology and therapeutic approach of cases of cellulitis of the orbital region admitted at the Pediatric Department of Hospital Center Tondela-Viseu (CHTV), in 11 years. Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of the clinical records of children admitted between January 2000 and December 2010. Results: Of the 93 children admitted, 94% had periorbital cellulitis (POC) and 6% orbital cellulitis (OC). The average age was six years and they were predominantly male (61%). Trauma was the most common known cause (12%). Cefuroxime was the first line antibiotic in 84% of cases, and the majority had a good outcome. There were complications in five of the six patients with OC (83%). There were no deaths. The majority were referred to their family doctor. Conclusions: We highlight the importance of the distinction between POC vs OC, as they require different clinical approaches. OC is associated with a higher incidence of complications.
