Abstract

MONTEIRO, Sílvia; ALMEIDA, Leandro S.; CRUZ, José Fernando A.  and  VASCONCELOS, Rosa M.. Perceptions of excellent students about the teachers’role: a study with engineering students. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.2, pp.213-238. ISSN 0871-9187.

Taking into account the literature on learning processes and the literature on excellence, this paper aims to analyze the perception of five excellent engineering students about the influence of teachers in their pathways throughout their development. To accomplish this, semi-structured interviews were developed, and conducted with the participants of this study. Over these interviews was performed a content analysis about the information related to teachers’ role, emerging seven categories. The aspects most referred by participants were the component of learning (instruction), the learning environment (motivation, incentive/stimulation and discipline/demand and teachers’ personal characteristics (affective-emotional component and teachers’ role model). Finally, there are presented some practical implications to teachers’ role as potential promoters of the development of these students.
