Abstract

ALVAREZ, Maria-João  and  OLIVEIRA, Michael. HIV/AIDS Prevention Program for university students: a pilot study. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2007, vol.20, n.2, pp.183-211. ISSN 0871-9187.

The study aims to increase behavioural skills and the adoption of preventive behaviours in HIV/AIDS besides consistent condom use, such as HIV testing by both partners. This quasi-experimental study was a small group intervention (N = 7) of 6, 3hr sessions held 1 week apart, with a comparison group attending other interventions, and a pre-post test evaluation and a 6-month follow-up. The intervention was based on the IMB model and used the Health and Relationships Survey as measure. As expected with such a small sample, there were no differences between groups (except for information). In the follow-up, changes were observed in behavioural skills, information and preventive behaviours in the intervention-group. Although levels of condom use were high, every participant had a HIV test, and the changes in the preventive behaviour had to be analysed accordingly. The conclusions reflect on the rapid adherence to other protective behaviours besides condom use and highlight the exploration of these alternatives in a controlled context, as an intervention, due to the habitual abandonment of this protection in long-term relationships without an HIV test.
