ALVES, Elisabete et al. Accessibility and use of information sources on cardiovascular health: perceptions of patients and physicians. Arq Med [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.5, pp.137-144. ISSN 2183-2447.

Introduction: The promotion of cardiovascular health comprises the dissemination of information among citizens and health professionals. This study aimed to map the perspectives of patients and physicians regarding privileged sources of information on cardiovascular health and the objectives for the use of the information obtained. Methods: Thematic content analysis of a focus group with physicians and other with patients, conducted in January and march 2011. The diversity of expertise areas and professional experience in cardiovascular disease (CVD), and of cardiovascular pathology in the patients group was guaranteed. Results: Patients and physicians highlighted the importance of obtaining information credible, accessible, clear, relevant and accurate, using it to identify and assess symptoms and risk factors, and understand the treatment adherence and efficacy, and the psychosocial consequences of the disease. Patients valued the information transmitted face-to-face by health professionals, or through images, aiming to understand the characteristics and consequences of the disease and the ways to manage it daily. Physicians appreciated information from websites and the exchange of information between peers, focusing on the dissemination of the information. Difficulties in standardizing recommendations and the enhancement of the knowledge empirically obtained can lead to inconsistencies in the information available. Conclusions: Patients and physicians favoured different information sources on cardiovascular health and used it for specific and distinct purposes. The perspectives of patients and physicians in the design and implementation of health policies on the prevention and management of CVD should be included, avoiding the over-utilization of the health care services.
