Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Ana  and  MASSANO, João. Gilles de La Tourett e Syndrome: Clinical Features, Diagnosis, and Therapeutic Approach. Arq Med [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.5, pp.211-217. ISSN 2183-2447.

Gilles de La Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common condition, with symptoms typically emerging during childhood. This disorder encompasses a variable combination of motor and vocal tics, obsessive thoughts and compulsions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and other important comorbidities, such as anxiety and depression. It is a benign but often disabling and stigmatizing condition. Patients are frequently misunderstood, and the disease misdiagnosed and undertreated. Accurate diagnosis remains founded on a skillful clinical observation and therapy is fundamental for quality of life improvements of both patients and their families. This manuscript presents an updated and practical clinical review, approaching symptoms, how to accurately explore them and diagnose the condition, as well as the several available therapeutic approaches. Deep brain stimulation is a last resort to keep in mind, which will also be focused in the text.

Keywords : Tourette syndrome; tics; obsessive-compulsive disorder; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; antipsychotics; deep brain stimulation.
