Abstract

MELO, Natália; JARAQUEMADA, Teresa  and  GONCALVES, Anabela. Amiodarone Toxicity . Arq Med [online]. 2005, vol.19, n.5-6, pp.199-202. ISSN 2183-2447.

The authors describe the case of a 49-year-old male patient with permanent atrial fibrillation diagnosed two years ago, being medicated with amiodarone (200 mg/day). He was hospitalized with clinical manifestations of asthenia, anorexia and emaciation, later accompanied by jaundice, hoarseness and tremor of the upper limbs. It was made the probable diagnosis of multiple toxicity of amiodarone (thyroid, hepatic, cutaneous, ocular), after an exhaustive examination. It is important to pay particular attention to the presence of multiple side-effects of the amiodarone in a patient treated with low doses of this medicine during a short period of time. This is one of the reasons why amiodarone should only be used when extremely necessary and under medical supervision.

Keywords : amiodarone; toxicity; hepatitis; hyperthyroidism; cutaneous hyperpigmentation.
