Abstract

COSTA, Andreia et al. The Tobacco Law in Portugal: Analysis of Media coverage (2010-2013). Rev. Port. Sau. Pub. [online]. 2016, vol.34, n.1, pp.85-91. ISSN 0870-9025.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rpsp.2015.10.002.

Over the years tobacco consumption has been established as a worldwide problem. Because of the consequences of this health problem, the Framework Convention of the World Health Organization (WHO) has emerged for the tobacco prevention and control. This was ratified by Portugal and has been implemented by Law No. 37/2007 of August 14th, which established limitations on smoking in enclosed areas intended for collective use, to protect the citizens of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke. This article reflects an analysis of a wide range of news on the topic of the Tobacco Law and tobacco consumption in general in the national media between 2010 and 2013. The analysis of this media spot allows checking if the media in Portugal are receptive to these issues by posting them to the population. To carry out this study, a set of news of many Portuguese communication media was analyzed, in accordance with quantitative (type of support and means of communication, publication date, national or regional impact, focus on the subject, etc.) and qualitative criteria (tone of news). The results show the existence of various news that address this issue, following the disclosure of new information, the occurrence of social events, the possibility of any legislation amendment or the implementation of a tobacco tax. It is considered that the media are aware of this problem and represent a key role in the prevention and control of smoking. Through the dissemination in the media, it is possible to contribute to the understanding and education of the audience and to the change of some health behaviors, thus promoting health literacy and consequently an improvement of population health.
