REIS, Marta; RAMIRO, Lúcia; MATOS, Margarida Gaspar de  e  DINIZ, José A.. Sexual behaviours of Portuguese university students of both sexes in 2010. Rev. Port. Sau. Pub. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.2, pp.105-114. ISSN 0870-9025.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rpsp.2012.12.001.

The impact caused by HIV/Aids and other risks related to sexual activity, such as unplanned pregnancy, is responsible for sexuality to be considered as a matter of social priority and a factor that may have a strong negative impact in terms of health, therefore ranking young people as an important target group in terms of sexual and reproductive health. This research assessed the sexual behaviors of university students of both sexes in Portugal. The sample of the national HBSC/SSREU study consists of 3278 young people between 18 and 35 years old. The findings show the majority has had sexual intercourse, had their first sexual intercourse at 16 or onwards and used either a condom or a contraceptive pill. The contraceptive methods chosen are usually the condom and the pill intended to prevent both a sexually transmitted infection and an unwanted pregnancy. Men report having had their first sexual intercourse earlier than women and report more frequently not having used any contraceptive method, which suggests a risky behaviour both in terms of unwanted pregnancy being infected with an STI. Men and older young people reported more often having sexual intercourse with another person during the romantic relationship, occasional sexual partners, more than three sexual partners in the last year and sexual intercourse under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The results reflect the need to implement educational policies in the context of sexuality, aiming at guiding young people about healthy sexual practices. It is essential to make young people more aware and more responsible for issues related to their sexual health, as well as their partners’.
