Abstract

AZAMBUJA, Mariana Ruwer de  and  NOGUEIRA, Conceição. What is the importance of violence against women in the Portuguese Journal of Public Health?. Rev. Port. Sau. Pub. [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.1, pp.57-65. ISSN 0870-9025.

Objective: In Portugal, since the 90’s, many initiatives are been adopted to deal with the problem of violence against women, which is recognized by WHO and others international institutions as a serious public health problem. Official sources of information confirm an increase in the number of cases registered, which represents, more than an incidence increase, a bigger visibility to the phenomena. Considering the Portuguese Journal of Public Health (RPSP) as the most important publication in its field in the national context, the study aims to analyze circulating discourses about violence against women in RPCG. Design: Observational, transversal, and exploratory study. Universe: All editions of RPSP available at the time of the study (October, 2007), which means editions between 2000 and 2007 inclusive. Methodology: Systematic review of all articles of the RPSP about the presence or absence of the «violence» descriptor. The review was conducted by the use of the «search» tool of Adobe Acrobat Reader informatics program. Thematic Analysis and Critical Discourse Analyses are used to analyze and discuss the results. Results: In all articles analyzed (169), only 24 (14,2%) had «violence» descriptors. However, none of these focused on domestic violence, either against women, children, or elderly people. Conclusions: The study shows that, in spite of the use of the world «violence», no articles of the RPSP focus on intimate partner violence against women or on violence against children, teenagers, elderly or people with deficiency. We concluded that domestic/family violence has not been recognized as a Public Health problem in the Portuguese Journal of Public Health, in spite of all WHO orientations about this besides national rules (such as the «National Health Plan 2004-2010» or the three «National Plan Against Domestic Violence»). We finished with some indications about how violence against women could be integrated in the reflections of the Portuguese Public Health field in the future.

Keywords : violence against women; general practice; public health; discourse analysis.
