In spite of the widespread use of the sintered iron components, with or without surface treatments, in sliding situations, there are very few papers about their tribological behaviour. In this work, the effect of processing parameters on the tribological behaviour of sintered pure iron, with or without steam oxidation, was analysed. Samples with three levels of density were used, ranging from 6.55 to 7.10 g/cm3. With the objective of obtaining different types of surface oxides (magnetite, hematite and wustite), steam treatments with different parameters were performed. The physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of the samples were evaluated. Reciprocating sliding wear tests in a ball on flat geometry were preformed under normal load of 8.8 and 29.4 N; stroke of 6 mm and frequency of 2 Hz. Wear was evaluated in terms of the volume loss of wear scar by using data of surface topography provided by a 3D laser interferometer and a special software. The wear mechanisms were analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Results show a great influence of the steam oxidation on the wear of the sintered pure iron.
