Abstract

SILVA, Cláudia Mendes da; BARROS, Luísa  and  SIMOES, Fátima. Aceitação e eficácia de um programa de intervenção psicoeducativa para pais de crianças com asma: Estudo exploratório. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2016, vol.34, n.4, pp.423-437. ISSN 0870-8231.  https://doi.org/10.14417/ap.1044.

Based on the importance of asthma education on disease management by the family, and on the lack of such programs in Portugal, we built a brief psychoeducational intervention directed to parents of children with asthma between 7 and 13 years old, to promote the acquisition of more adaptive asthma management attitudes. This study aimed to evaluate its acceptability, efficacy and satisfaction with by parents. Ten mothers completed the intervention, by participating in 3 intervention group sessions and in the 3 assessments (at baseline, at the end of the intervention and at follow-up). In addition to socio-demographic and clinical data collection, it were applied two questionnaires, one assessing knowledge about asthma and other children’s quality of life (DISABKIDS-37, versions to parent and child). It was also used an interview about asthma management by the family (FAMSS) at baseline and at follow-up. From the results obtained, we highlight the moderate increase in mothers’ knowledge and in disease management practices. This study emphasizes the usefulness of psychoeducational interventions for parents of children with asthma.
