Abstract

PRECIOSO, José; ARAUJO, Ana Carolina; SAMORINHA, Catarina  and  CORREIA, Cláudia. Porque é que pais e mães fumadores fumam dentro de casa?. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2016, vol.34, n.4, pp.391-402. ISSN 0870-8231.  https://doi.org/10.14417/ap.912.

This study aims to identify the factors influencing smoking parents to smoke or not to smoke at home. Semi-structured interviews were held by phone with parents of children in the 4th grade: 10 smoking fathers and 10 mothers who smoked at home, and 10 smoking fathers and 10 mothers who did not smoke at home. The content analysis revealed that concern about the health of children and the bad smell were the main reasons mentioned by parents not to smoke at home. The comfort and weather conditions were the main reported reasons to smoke at home. Smoking parents who smoke at home seem to have greater awareness of the risks of smoking indoors to the health of children while parents who smoke at home do it mainly for comfort and apparent ignorance of the negative consequences of that behavior. The improvement of parental knowledge about the consequences of exposure to secondhand smoke should be a priority of health education. It is essential that health professionals of different specialties are involved in the treatment of tobacco dependence, promoting smoking cessation among parents, which is the safest way to ensure the creation of smoke-free homes.

Keywords : Smoking at home; Determinants; Prevention.
