A compassionate collective capacity has clear implications on performance and well-being of individuals in the context of organizations (Lilius, Worline, Maitlis, Kanov, Dutton, & Frost, 2008). This study aims to describe how the combined effect of organizational and structural characteristics of flexibility practices contributes to the increase of compassionate collective responses (in organizations with pro-social mission vs. mission focused on productivity). This objective presupposes that regardless of their mission (prosocial vs. productive), all organizations may have the capacity to self-organize in a compassionate manner to minimize the suffering of employees, although they can do so through different mechanisms. This response may, however, be more facilitated in organizations with a flexible and humanized cultural values.
