ISSN 0870-8231.

Research on parenting practices have shown the existence of a relationship with the academic and social adjustment of children and adolescents. In this study we aim to analyze the relationship between parenting practices of criticism and perfectionism perceived by students and their self-esteem, self- concept, motivational orientations and the use of self-handicapping strategies. Participants were 170 adolescents from the 7th, 8th and 9th grade of a private school in the greater Lisbon area, who answered to the Critical Parenting Inventory (Randolph & Dyckman, 1998, adapted by Miguel, 2010), a multidimensional scale of perfectionism (Soares, Gomes Macedo, & Azevedo, 2003, adapted by Miguel, 2010), a scale of self-concept and self-esteem (Peixoto & Almeida, 1999), a scale of motivational orientations (Skaalvik 1997, adapted by Peixoto, Mata, & Monteiro, 2008) and a scale of academic self-handicapping (Martin, 1998, adapted by Borralho, 2005). Results showed that students that perceived their parents as perfectionists and critics regarding their academic performance presented lower self-esteem, lower self-concept, motivational orientations more directed towards self-defeating ego orientation and towards avoidance and less task oriented as well as a greater tendency to use self- handicapping strategies, than their peers who do not perceived their parents in this way.

Palabras clave : Family; adolescents; perfectionism; self-esteem; academic self-concept; motivation; self- handicapping.
