ISSN 0870-8231.

In this research we have two main aims: to understand and characterize the parents’ beliefs about literacy learning and about their role in this process; to analyze the relationships between different beliefs and also between beliefs and family literacy practices and literacy home environments. In this study participated 198 parents of children attending the last year of preschool. For data collection we used a questionnaire that included the characterization of four different components: (1) family literacy practices, (2) beliefs about literacy learning process, (3) beliefs about the role of parents in literacy learning; (4) literacy environments. The results allowed us to identify different frequencies for different kinds of literacy practices: teaching and training practices were the most frequent, followed by entertainment practices and, lastly, the day-to-day. In what concerns beliefs, we found that parents value their role in various aspects (reading stories, teaching practices and contextualized). A cluster analysis allowed the identification of three groups of parents with different characteristics both in literacy practices and in beliefs. We could not conclude on the existence of a linear association between beliefs and practices because parents into distinct groups had similar conceptions in certain aspects. However, each group had some peculiarities that allowed us a deeper understanding of the relationships between beliefs and family literacy practices. Regarding the implications of this study, they are discussed concerning the school-family partnership and the pre-school education literacy practices.
