The present study analyses the family's role in children and adolescents' socialization development, namely in what concerns the role of family structure and parent-child relations. Hence, our aim was to verify, on the one hand, if family structure alone would be a significant variable for the development of social behaviours or if, on the other hand, parent-child relations would best predict children's socialization. For that purpose, 182 children and adolescents attending school from the 6th to the 9th grades were asked to answer three self-report measures assessing sociodemographic aspects, socialization variables, and parent-child relations. Overall, results allow us to assume that, more than family structure by itself, it is the way family members relate to each other that will influence the development of the children's socialization. It is our belief that such conclusion may translate into important and useful implications regarding the development of social behaviours in childhood and adolescence, not only for families, but also for all institutions and professionals that deal with family matters.
