ANTUNES, Joana    MACHADO, Carla. Violência nas relações íntimas ocasionais de uma amostra estudantil. []. , 30, 1-2, pp.93-107. ISSN 0870-8231.

This paper presents the results of a research project on the prevalence of violence in the casual intimate involvements of a sample of 600 university and college students. 72.3% of the participants reported to have been involved in such relationships. They answered a violence inventory (IVC-4, Antunes & Machado, 2007), and 43.2% of them admitted to have perpetrated at least one abusive act towards a casual partner along their lives (30.1% report acts of physical violence) and 37.3% admit to have been victimized by a casual partner (20.4% describe acts of physical violence). Violence is more common among younger subjects, those that attend to lower educational levels and students from secondary schools. It is also more common among participants that have had a higher number of casual relationships. These results corroborate the notion that violence in juvenile intimate relationships is a serious social problem. They also suggest, because the levels of violence found are quite higher than those reported for juvenile dating relationships (Machado, Caridade, & Martins, 2009), that casual intimate involvements may imply specific dynamics that enhance the risk of violence and that should be addressed by future studies.
