Integration in psychotherapy has grown in Portugal and its prevalence among psychotherapists has been studied. However, little is known with regards to the types and ways this integration is taking place. The present study sought to explore and describe the way psychotherapists integrate interventions from different theoretical models. Its main goal was to investigate if integration was performed in a systematic way, responsive to the patient’s characteristics, and based on empirical evidence. Sixty five psycho therapists participated in the study (78% female, mean age of 32 years old), with a range of clinical experience (0.5-20 years) and different theoretical orientations. Participants responded to a questionnaire, developed based on the Systematic Treatment Selection model, using both a quantitative and a qualitative approach. Results showed that the way Portuguese psychotherapists integrate interventions is very diverse, varying from the systematic use of empirically based principles to the development of unique models. Two main clusters of psychotherapists emerged with respect to theoretical orientation: (1) psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapists, who less often identify with other models (and vice-versa) and (2) cognitive, behavioral, humanistic and systemic therapists, who identified often among these models. Psycho therapists who identified more with the theoretical models of humanistic and integrative approaches reported to be more responsive to patient characteristics when choosing intervention types. Implications for practice and training of psychotherapists in Portugal are discussed.
