Recommended practices in Early Intervention are family-centered and based on the learning opportunities that occur within natural settings and family routines. In this paper we present two case-studies with data collected from observation, interviews and documental analysis. In the first, home-based, the early intervention professional implemented family-centered and routine-based practices. As a result, mother considered that she could have a better interaction with her child and that family life was improved. In the second, centered-based, services were child-focused and the family was not involved. During the first year all services were provided outside the natural learning environment. During the second year, the integrated support may have contributed to a greater involvement of the child in interactive situations both with peers and classroom teacher. Data on professionals’ perceptions show that they agree with family-centered early intervention philosophy but these case-studies, with data from observation, show that family centered and routine based practices are still an issue in early intervention.
