With this theoretical essay, we try to think about the experience of being HIV positive from an existential and psychological standpoint, addressing both the difficulties of living with a body perceived as “unhealthy”, and the difficulties associated with this particular infection. We try also to think about the factors affecting treatment adherence to antiretroviral therapy and, finally, from an existential-phenomenological perspective, we seek to shed light on the reasons behind the difficulties in coping with this diagnosis.
