The aim of this article is to enhance the understanding of the major contributes of supported employment for the integration of people with mental illness. To explore these contributes was used a review of literature. We intend to explore the evolution of the supported employment model, the evidence based practice, and two additional concepts. The first one is the establishment of a carrier in specialized employment, increasing access to and success in university through supported education. The second one is the development of natural support networks to empower individuals’ roles in the workforce and decrease their reliance on professional support. This literature outlines the potential of supported education and natural supports for the future of supported employment.
