Literature provides a powerful overview into the nature of human thought and conduct. Here, the traits of a literary character, Mickey Sabbath, from Philip Roth’s novel The Sabbath’s Theater, are analyzed in view of one of the main theoritical formulations of the freudian theory: the Death Drive. A new interpretative analytical grid, based on the T.A.T.-process, is introduced to establish indicators of the character’s mental organization and five excerpts of the novel are analyzed to characterize the main mental processes and problematical aspects underlying the character’s discourse. Introduced for the first time in Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), the Death Drive concept has gathered the attention of several generations of psychoanalytical authors, most notably that of Jean Laplanche and Andre Green. As a final point, the character is analyzed under the light of the Death Drive concept.
