Writing about gays and lesbians in the context of portuguese psychology and psychiatry is not very usual. This is particulary clear if we consider the theme of gays and lesbians and family in the field of family therapy. As family therapists we are deeply concerned with this artificial separation between the study of gays and lesbians and the study of family, because it seems to have foundations in the stereotypes of popular and scientific culture that gays and lesbians are people disconnected from their family of origin, little envolved in a marital or a family project, or even anti-family. In this context, we decide to study the theme of the coming out and family relationships. We hope that our reflections bring some contribute, at the theoretical and clinical levels, to the portuguese therapists and particulary to family therapists.
