^lpt^aO objectivo é o de construir um modelo teórico sobre o comportamento parental de mães adolescentes. O estudo teve a participação de 21 mulheres que foram mães na sua adolescência, com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 18 anos na altura do parto e de uma psicóloga que trabalha com mães adolescentes. Na altura das entrevistas as mães tinham idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 35 anos de idade. Foram analisadas 22 entrevistas das quais 17 pertencem a estudos anteriores (Bentes, 1996; Araújo, 2000; Alves, 2003; Cabrita, 2004). Como instrumento foram utilizadas entrevistas semi-estruturadas que foram gravadas, e depois transcritas e analisadas pelo método da Grounded Theory. Verificámos que algumas mães adolescentes revelam uma indisponibilidade materna em relação aos seus filhos, manifestada pela falta de paciência, indiferença, respostas inadequadas, dificuldade nos cuidados maternos, dificuldade de compreensão dos sinais do bebé, agressividade e atribuição de características negativas ao bebé. Pelo contrário, algumas mães adolescentes conseguem adaptar-se à maternidade e mostram ter disponibilidade materna manifestada pela facilidade nos cuidados maternos, preocupação com o filho, paciência, compreensão dos sinais do bebé e pelo brincar com ele. O apoio social revelou-se como um factor protector da adaptação à maternidade.^len^aThe purpose of this paper is to build a theoretical model about the parental behaviour of adolescent mothers. The study had the participation of twenty-one teenage mothers, aged between 14 and 18 years old at the time of delivery, and one psychologist that work with young mothers. At the moment of interviews mothers aged 15 to 32 years old. Twenty-two interviews were analysed in witch seventeen of these belong to previous studies (Bentes, 1996; Araújo, 2000; Alves, 2003; Cabrita, 2004). We used semi-structured interviews that were taped and than transcribed and analysed through the Grounded Theory method. We found that some of the adolescent mothers reveal a maternal unavailability towards their children, reflected by lack of patience, indifference, inadequate responses, difficulty in baby care, difficulty in understanding the baby’s signals, aggressive behaviour and negative characteristics attributed to the baby. On the contrary, some adolescent mothers overcome the difficulties of adapting to maternity and reveal a maternal availability, reflected facility in baby care, concern with the child, patience, comprehension of the baby’s signals and play when interacting with their children. Social support revealed as a protective factor in the maternity adaptation.
