PEDRO, Neuza  e  PEIXOTO, Francisco. Satisfação profissional e auto-estima em professores dos 2.º e 3.º ciclos do Ensino Básico. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.2, pp.247-262. ISSN 0870-8231.

The relevance and interest about teacher’s job satisfaction come from the fact that it appears associated with such important variables as physical and mental well-being, motivation, pawning and involvement, stress, absenteeism, professional performance and success of the teachers. In the same way, we also know that a poor job satisfaction in teachers, affect not only themselves but also the students; because the disinterest and low teaching performance can directly contribute for the reduction of student’s interest and investment in the classroom and, consequently for the decrease of the quality of the instructional process. The purpose of the present study is to analyse the levels of job satisfaction of portuguese teachers, as well as the factors behind the real job satisfaction. We also attempt to explore the effects caused by the "years on teaching" and the "subject teached" in the job satisfaction, and try to understand if satisfaction/dissatisfaction in the professional dimension of the self could influence the self-esteem, the global perception of their own value. For that we used two instruments, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale and a Job Satisfaction Questionnaire for teachers. Participants of the present study were 79 portuguese teachers from five 2nd and 3rd cycle schools in Vale do Tejo region. Results showed that teachers present reduced levels of job satisfaction, and that those levels were predominantly justified by social-political factors. There was also found significant differences associated to the "years on teaching" and "disciplinary group"; the highest levels of job satisfaction were, respectively, presented by teachers in the middle of the career (7 to 15 years) and teaching disciplines of the C Group "Musical Education, Physical Education, Technologic and Visual Education". In the same sense, a strong correlation was found between teacher’s job satisfaction and teacher’s self-esteem. It was also verified that a large part of the variability of self-esteem was associated with factor 1 (Students dimension).
