Abstract
NEVES, Maria do Carmo and CARVALHO, Carolina. A importância da afectividade na aprendizagem da matemática em contexto escolar: Um estudo de caso com alunos do 8.º ano. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.2, pp.201-215. ISSN 0870-8231.
This paper is based on a classroom investigation that place in a Lisbon school with an 8th grade Mathematics class. We chose a qualitative methodology of the naturalistic type, with a descriptive and interpretative approach. Data were collected through direct observation and videotaping of certain classes, analysis of the pupils answers to three questionnaires and semi-structured intervieews. The following research questions were determined: (a) What is the relationship between the affective dimension and Mathematics?; (b) Which elements sustain this relationship?; (c) What is the relationship between pupils attitudes in class and their learning in Mathematics? and (d) How can pupils become emotionally involved in learning Mathematics? The main findings were as follows: pupils mathematical activity is influenced by prior experiences with their teachers, colleagues, parents and Mathematics. Pupils value teachers who seek to respond to their needs, play with them, are affable, calm and do not customarily shout in class. The relationship of trust that pupils establish with Mathematics teachers is reflected in their learning of mathematical knowledge.
