Abstract

RIBEIRO, J. Pais  and  SANTOS, Abel. Estudo exploratório da relação entre função eréctil, disfunção eréctil e qualidade de vida em homens portugueses saudáveis. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.3, pp.341-349. ISSN 0870-8231.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) it’s a prevalent dysfunction in modern societies partly because these societies are growing old. Erectile Function (EF) is an important component of sexual functioning but with moderate relation with ED. The purpose of this work is to assess the quality of life (QOL) factors associated with ED and EF. 133 Portuguese healthy males, aged between 21 and 78 years of age (M=43,86; SD=14,39), answer to a self-rated questionnaire mail typed. ED was defined using the Reduced International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) and the FE using the general form of IIEF. QOL was measured through the SF-36 questionnaire. Results shows that the ED group (32,8% of the sample) exhibits statistically significant lower results in physical domains of QOL in comparison with the non-Ed group. The EF as a result of all the domain of IIEF increases as the scores of the scales of the SF-36 increase (mainly the physical domains). The two SF-36 summary components (physical and mental) showed an upward trend. In conclusion, we found a clear pattern of positive association between self-perceived EF and QOL, and significant differences between the ED group and the non-Ed group favouring the non-Ed group for the same variables. This association was stronger for the physical summary component than for the mental one, but with a consistent interaction with the mental component.
