The goal of this study was to characterize and describe the evaluative dimensions that may be found in the social representations of health professionals (physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, dieticians, physiotherapists) working in a maternity hospital, in what concerns surrogacy, surrogate motherhood and surrogate mothers. An instrument was developed composed of five open questions and twenty three closed questions in a Likert scale. The surveys were filled by a sample of eighty health professionals of a maternity hospital in Lisbon. In general, the results show that personal inferences of the health professionals about the subject under investigation were related with pre-existent representations and preconceptions and not with scientific knowledge.
