This research, based on the Erikson’s psychosocial development perspective, has as its fundamental goal to study the relations between developmental psychosocial tasks and anxiety in young people. In this study we used a sample of 511 Portuguese young people, with ages between 17 and 26 years, which attended several higher education courses in the Porto area. Globally, results show that a constructive resolution of psychosocial tasks corresponds to a smaller tendency for anxiety. Results also allow the understanding of the specific contribution each stage has concerning the development of different anxious structures. As for gender, results indicate the presence of significant effects for fears, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, as well as for psychosocial developmental stages.
