Abstract

MENDES, Ricardo. Ansiedade nos motociclistas. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.1, pp.43-47. ISSN 0870-8231.

This paper addresses the impact and outcome of anxiety in behaviour and motor performance, with special emphasis given to the role of anxiety in the behaviour of motorcyclists. Despite the motorcycle being, most times, a source of euphoric, pleasurable feelings, providing a sense of personal fulfilment, with speed in itself creating positive emotions and enthusiasm amongst the riders, it can also awaken anxiogenic-based dysphoric sensations in motorcyclists. Considering the increasing number of motorcycle accidents year upon year, seen by Traffic Psychology as a serious problem due to both the implication rate and the usual gravity of the accidents themselves, and given the danger inherent to the combination of anxiety and motorcycle riding, some theoretical and practical implications on the prevention of two-wheel traffic accidents will also be analysed.

Keywords : Anxiety; driving; risk.
