The main objective of this research was to characterise the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adolescents attending secondary schools in the district of Palmela. The Portuguese version of the Children Depression Inventory (CDI) was applied to a sample of 570 teenagers, ranging from 12 to 17 years of age. The psychometric characteristics of the Inventory were studied, the percentage of individuals in psychological distress was determined (total sample and sub sample) and studies on the predictive effect of criteria variables relating the results in the CDI were also made. The results of the study, its practical implications and limitations are here discussed.
