Abstract

PEREIRA, Maria Graça  and  ALMEIDA, Paulo. Auto-eficácia na diabetes: Conceito e validação da escala. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2004, vol.22, n.3, pp.585-595. ISSN 0870-8231.

This study describes the adaptation of the Self efficacy Diabetes Scale (SEDS) (Grossman, Brink & Hauser, 1987) in a Portuguese sample. This scale is based in self-efficacy theory of Bandura and intends to assess personal perceptions towards competency, skills and means for adolescents to manage diabetes. The sample in our study is composed by 175 adolescents from the Endocrinology Service in S. John´s Hospital in Oporto. The scale with 35 items grouped in three subscales, was assessed in terms of its psychometric properties following a methodology similar to the original authors. The Portuguese version shows an alpha of .90. The alphas for the subscales: self efficacy in medical situations, self-efficacy in general situations and self-efficacy towards treatment of diabetes are respectively: .62, .63, and .87. The final version was reduced to 30 items. The items are grouped in three components as the original version: self-efficacy towards treatment, social self-efficacy and trust.

Keywords : Diabetes; self-efficacy; adolescents.
