Abstract

GOMES, Rita et al. Comportamento parental na situação de risco do cancro infantil. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2004, vol.22, n.3, pp.519-531. ISSN 0870-8231.

Parent behaviour was studied in child cancer situation. Seventeen semi-structured interviews were analysed based on the Grounded Theory method. Thirteen interviews belong to previous studies (Gonçalves & Pires, 2001; Silva, Pires, Gonçalves, & Moura, 2001; Silva, 2002). Since the appearance of the first symptoms until the relapse stage, the diagnostic participation, the hospitalization and the treatments, the main concern that these parents experiment is to hide aspects related with the illness, namely, the confirmation of the diagnostic, his impact, the heavy word, the suffer, the illness gravity, the pain, the secondary effects and death possibility. For that, parents develop strategies, as: not speaking the word, lie, place with the situation, not crying, equalize the behaviour, not thinking, suffer by place, among others, that allow them to achieve the behaviour and at the same time try to adapt themselves and their ill children in the best possible way. So they consider that something that provides a better adaption is the child unknowingness about the aspects of her illness.

Keywords : Child cancer; parental behaviour; Grounded Theory; hide.
