Laypersons in Medicine present alternative meanings or explanations on health and illness processes. These explanations coexist and compete with those of endorsed by health professionals. This paper describes a qualitative research that was carried with 67 lay adults. The study objectives were: 1) to assess lay conceptions about health and disease; 2) to compare those conceptions after an open question and after the exposition of the participant to a narrative; 3) to analyse the prevalence of lay conceptions on these group of subjects.
