To characterize what gets published in specialized Portuguese journals of psychology, we analyzed the articles published from 1996 to 2003 in three journals: Psicologia: teoria, investigação e prática, associated with the University of Minho; Psychologica, associated with the University of Coimbra; and Análise Psicológica, associated with the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada, located at Lisbon. We tabulated the nationality, gender, and institutional affiliation of the authors of the articles and also classified the articles in terms of their content area and methodology. The results, which were similar across the three journals, showed that a) most of the authors are Portuguese working at a university, often at the same university that publishes the journal; b) the articles address mainly the applied areas of clinical and educational psychology; c) half of the articles consist of literature reviews or conceptual analyses; and d) only five per cent used experimental methodology. The results are interpreted at the light of the Portuguese university context, in general, and our research experiences in Portugal, in particular.
